AHS Student’s Love of Agriculture and Music Pays Off Wednesday, September 23, 2009
An average daily schedule for AHS junior Cody Scarborough isn’t what most 16-year-olds would call “typical”.
Cody starts his day off by waking up at 6 a.m. to tend his livestock before he heads to school for a full day of learning. After school he attends band practice until about 6 p.m. and then heads back home to take care of his livestock, and after more than 12 hours of working, Cody still isn’t finished. That’s when he tackles his homework, which includes work for AP and Pre-AP courses as well as one college class. In his spare time, Cody also manages to have a part-time job twice a week.
This strong work ethic and drive is what Cody calls “making the best of his time,” and it has helped him excel in numerous arenas and most recently has earned him a spot playing tuba in the highly selective National FFA Band that will perform in Indianapolis at the 82nd National FFA Convention October 21-24 (televised on RFD-TV—more information at www.rfdtv.com).
“Right now I’m not nervous, but probably I will get more nervous when it gets closer, especially when I walk on stage and see Mike Rowe (host of Dirty Jobs and the event keynote speaker),” Cody said. “I’ve played in front of large crowds before but never this big. It will be amazing.”
Cody, one of 92 FFA members selected for the FFA band, will perform in front of an audience of more than 54,000 at the convention, which Cody has always dreamed of attending. He says he was looking online with his agriculture teacher Traylor Lenz for ways to go to the convention and stumbled onto the announcement for National FFA Band auditions. He figured this was for him.
